Sip of Paradise: Exploring Famous Puerto Rican Drinks

Alright, let’s talk about them Puerto Rican drinks, you know, the stuff they like to gulp down over there. I ain’t never been there myself, mind you, but my niece, she went once and told me all about it. So, here’s the lowdown, as best as I can remember it.

First off, they got this thing called Coquito. Sounds like a little bird, don’t it? But it ain’t no bird. It’s like their Christmas drink, kinda like that eggnog stuff folks drink up north around the holidays. My niece said it’s made with coconut, and if you like coconut, you’ll probably like this here Coquito. She said it’s creamy and sweet and goes down real smooth.

  • Coquito – Coconutty and creamy, like a tropical eggnog.
  • Piña Colada – Sweet and fruity, the national drink of Puerto Rico.
  • Guanabana Juice – Also called soursop, kinda weird but some folks like it.

Then there’s the Piña Colada. Now that one, I’ve heard of before. It’s their big-shot drink, the one everybody knows about. They say it’s made with pineapple and coconut and rum, all mixed up together. My niece said it’s real sweet and you can’t even taste the rum much, which is probably why them young folks like it so much. She said it’s the national drink, so you know it’s gotta be a big deal over there. They make a big fuss about it, seems like.

And then there’s this other one, Guanabana Juice. Sounds like something you’d find growing in the woods, don’t it? They also call it soursop, which don’t sound much better if you ask me. My niece said it’s kinda sweet and kinda sour, all mixed up. She said it’s got a funny taste, but some folks swear by it. I don’t know, I reckon I’d stick to something I know, like lemonade or somethin’. But hey, to each their own, I always say.

Now, these ain’t the only drinks they got over there, mind you. My niece said they got all sorts of juices and sodas and whatnot. But these three, the Coquito, the Piña Colada, and that Guanabana Juice, those are the ones she remembered the best. Said they’re the real deal, the ones you gotta try if you ever go down there.

Speaking of trying things, my niece, she’s a real adventurous one, always trying new things. She even tried some of that Puerto Rican Sangria, she said. Now, I know Sangria, my neighbor makes it sometimes in the summer. It’s got wine and fruit and all sorts of stuff in it. But this Puerto Rican Sangria, my niece said it was a bit different. Sweeter, maybe, or maybe it was just the way they made it. She said they put all sorts of tropical fruits in it, stuff you don’t see around here. Sounded fancy to me.

And they got coffee too, my niece said. Strong coffee, the kind that’ll wake you up and get you goin’. She said they drink it all day long, not just in the morning like we do. I reckon that’s why they’re always so energetic, running around and dancing and what not. They also have those shots, she told me, little drinks that are strong and get you tipsy real fast. I don’t know much about those, never been one for hard liquor myself. But she said they got all sorts of them, different flavors and all.

So, there you have it, a little rundown of them Puerto Rican drinks. Like I said, I ain’t never been there, but from what my niece told me, they got some interesting stuff going on over there. If you ever get the chance to go, you ought to try some of them drinks yourself. Just remember what I told you: Coquito, Piña Colada, Guanabana Juice, and maybe that Sangria if you’re feeling fancy. And if you like coffee, you’ll be in good shape, they got plenty of that too. And watch out for them shots, they’ll sneak up on you if you ain’t careful.

Anyways, that’s all I know about them drinks. My niece could tell you more, I reckon, but she ain’t here right now. Maybe I’ll ask her more about it next time she comes to visit. She’s always got stories to tell, that one. Always running off somewhere and doing something. Keeps me on my toes, that’s for sure.

But that’s enough about my niece. We were talking about drinks, weren’t we? Well, I think I’ve told you all I know. So go on now, and if you ever find yourself in Puerto Rico, you’ll know what to drink. And if you don’t like it, well, you can always stick to water. Can’t go wrong with water, I always say. It’s good for you, and it won’t make you do anything silly.

Alright, I’m done talkin’ now. My throat’s gettin’ dry just thinking about all them drinks. Maybe I’ll go make myself some lemonade. That sounds good right about now.
