Well, howdy there! Today, we’re gonna yak about them Chinese cookie sayings, you know, the little papers you find inside them crunchy cookies? Yeah, them things. Don’t rightly know why they call ’em Chinese, but that ain’t here nor there.
Some folks take them sayings real serious, like they’re gospel truth. Me? I just chuckle and move on. But I reckon some of ’em ain’t half bad, and some are just plain silly. So, let’s get down to brass tacks and see what kind of wisdom them cookies try to dish out. Don’t expect me to get all fancy, I’ll say it like it is.
First off, you got your “good luck” sayings. You know, stuff like “You will have good fortune” or “Good things are coming your way.” Well, that’s mighty fine and dandy, but it don’t tell you much, does it? It’s like sayin’ the sun’s gonna rise tomorrow. We kinda expect that, don’t we? I always say, luck is what you make it, not some words on a piece of paper.
Then you got your “love” sayings. Oh, them are somethin’ else. “You will meet a tall, dark stranger.” Shoot, sounds like a movie! Or maybe, “Your love life will be full of excitement.” Excitement ain’t always a good thing, you hear? Sometimes it just means trouble! One cookie told me, “Romance is in the air.” Well, I live on a farm, so there’s always plenty of “air” around, if you catch my drift. Hah!
- Love sayings are tricky, I tell ya. They make folks all dreamy-eyed, but real love ain’t found in a cookie. It’s found in hard work and sticking together, like me and my old man.
- And speaking of hard work, some of them cookies try to give you life advice. Like, “The road less traveled leads to regret and recrimination. Choose the busy highway instead”. Well, that one’s a bit different, ain’t it? Always heard it the other way around! Sounds like someone got their wires crossed! My advice? Just stick to the road that gets you where you need to go. Don’t need no fancy cookie to tell you that.
- Another one I saw was about lowering your expectations. Said something like, “Happiness comes to those who lower their expectations. Aim low and avoid disappointment.” Well, that ain’t the American way, is it? We always say to reach for the stars! But maybe there’s some truth in it, I reckon. Less you expect, less you get disappointed. Still, aimin’ a little high ain’t a bad thing.
Some of them are downright confusing, though. Had one the other day that said, “Do not follow your passion. Passion is fleeting and will leave you destitute.” Now what kind of sense does that make? If you don’t follow your passion, what are you supposed to follow? Some fella’s tellin’ you what to do? Nah, you gotta do what makes you happy, even if it means things get a little tough sometimes. Them cookies don’t know nothin’ about workin’ hard for what you want.
And then there’s the ones that just make you scratch your head. “A duck may swim smoothly, but it still paddles fast underneath.” Okay, so…ducks paddle? I coulda told you that! Don’t need no cookie for that kind of information. Makes ya wonder who comes up with this stuff.
I guess what I’m sayin’ is, them Chinese cookie sayings are just a bit of fun. Don’t take ’em too serious. They’re like them little carnival games, you might win a prize, but mostly you just waste a dollar and have a laugh. Life ain’t figured out by a cookie, it’s figured out by livin’ it, day in and day out. Work hard, be kind to folks, and keep your chin up. That’s better advice than any cookie can give ya. And remember what I always say, “No pain, no gain”, that’s what them old Chinese fellas used to say too.
And for all you young’uns out there, don’t go chasin’ after every little shiny thing them cookies promise. Make your own luck, find your own love, and live your own life. That’s the real fortune, right there.
