Alright, alright, let’s talk about this here… uh… “dessert that might have lattice.” Sounds fancy, don’t it? But don’t you worry none, I’ll make it plain as day for ya.
What’s this Lattice thingy anyway?
Well, picture this: you got yourself a pie, right? And on top, instead of just a plain ol’ crust, you got strips of dough all crisscrossed like a fence. That’s your lattice! Pretty, ain’t it? Makes the whole thing look…well, I guess you could say “high class”. Makes folks think you spent all day slavin’ in the kitchen, even if you didn’t. Heh!
So, what kinda desserts can have this lattice thing?
Oh, all sorts! Mostly pies, I reckon. Apple pie, cherry pie, even those fancy-pants lemon cheesecakes they talk about on the TV. I saw one time on them cooking shows, they was makin’ somethin’ called a tart with that lattice on top, too. Looked right tasty, though I bet it’d take me all day to make it looking so nice.
- Apple Pie: Now this is a good ‘un. Apples, cinnamon, sugar…all baked up nice and warm with that crisscross dough on top. Can’t go wrong with a good ol’ apple pie. My grandmama used to make the best apple pies, lattice and all, never measured nothin’, just threw it all together and it always came out perfect, she had the knack I tell ya.
- Cherry Pie: A little bit tart, a little bit sweet, just right. And that red cherry juice peeking through the lattice…makes your mouth water just thinkin’ about it. You gotta use them tart cherries though, not that sweet stuff in a can, makes it too sugary, you want a little tang.
- Lemon Cheesecake: I ain’t never made one of these myself, seems too fussy. But they say it’s real good, creamy and lemony with that lattice on top. Says on the TV it’s “zesty,” whatever that means. Sounds like somethin’ for city folk, but I bet it’s good with a cup of coffee.
- Tarts: Like I said before, I seen’em make tarts with that lattice. They can put all sorts of things in them, fruits, custards… you name it. Kinda like a little pie, but fancier, I guess. More work for not much more food if you ask me.
How do you make this lattice, then?
Well, you gotta make your dough first, that’s the most important part. Flour, butter, a little bit of water… mix it all up, roll it out thin. Then you cut it into strips and start weavin’ em, over and under, like you’re makin’ a basket. There’s all sorts of fancy ways to do it, but a plain crisscross works just fine. Don’t go frettin’ about makin’ it perfect, tastes the same no matter what it looks like, that’s what I always say.
What about them store-bought lattice biscuits?
Now, I heard tell of them things. Guess they make it easier, just slap them on top and bake. But I reckon nothin’ beats the real thing, made from scratch. Store-bought stuff always tastes…well, like store-bought stuff. But if you’re in a hurry, I guess it’ll do. No shame in takin’ a shortcut now and then, specially if you got a house full of hungry mouths to feed.
Any other tips for makin’ a good dessert?
Use good ingredients, that’s the key. Fresh fruit, real butter, don’t skimp on the good stuff. And don’t be afraid to experiment. Maybe add a little nutmeg to your apple pie, or a bit of almond extract to your cherry. It’s all about what tastes good to you. Oh and don’t forget a little pinch of salt, makes everything taste better, even sweet things, it’s the truth, I tell ya! And most importantly, bake it with love. That’s what makes it special, that’s what makes it taste like home.
Last thing about this… uh… lattice desserts, fruits is always a good idea.
Fruits are a great choice for making desserts too. They’re already sweet and tasty, and you don’t gotta do much to them. Just bake ’em up with a little sugar and spice, maybe put a little lattice on top if you’re feelin’ fancy, but they’re good just as they are. Fruits is a blessing I tell ya, straight from the good lord, tasty and good for ya too. And they sure are easier to get a hold of than all them fancy ingredients them city folk use.
So there you have it, all you need to know about desserts that might have lattice. Go on and make somethin’ tasty, don’t be scared. Even if it ain’t perfect, it’ll still be good. And that’s all that matters, ain’t it?
Now get on outta here and let me get back to my work!
