Okay, here’s my sharing about “Jain Recipes” today:
So I got this thing for cooking, right? And lately, I’ve been digging into Jain recipes. Sounds fancy, but it’s basically just cooking without certain stuff, like onions and garlic and a few other things. First, I searched what the jain recipes are, and what should I pay attention to.
Then I tried to find some easy recipes. Man, there are tons of them out there! I started with the basics, like, simple veggie dishes and lentil soups. The recipes I found were pretty straightforward, no crazy steps or weird ingredients. I just followed the instructions, chopping up some veggies, throwing them in a pot with some spices, and letting it all simmer. It’s kind of cool because you really get to taste the natural flavors of the food without all the strong oniony or garlicky taste.
I also experimented with some flatbreads. They call them rotis or parathas, and they’re made without yeast. It took me a few tries to get the hang of it, rolling out the dough and cooking them on a hot pan. My first few were, uh, let’s just say they were “rustic”. But hey, practice makes perfect, right?
My Simple Jain Recipe
- Rinse 1 cup of red lentils thoroughly.
- Combine the lentils in a pot with 4 cups of water, 1 teaspoon of turmeric, and salt to taste.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 20-25 minutes, or until the lentils are soft.
- In a separate pan, heat 1 tablespoon of oil or ghee.
- Add 1/2 teaspoon of cumin seeds and let them splutter.
- Add a pinch of asafoetida and 1 chopped green chili.
- Pour this tempering over the cooked lentils.
- Stir well and garnish with fresh cilantro.
Honestly, cooking Jain food has been a fun ride. It’s simple, it’s tasty, and it’s pretty healthy too. Plus, it’s kind of satisfying to make a meal without relying on the usual flavor boosters. I’ve even managed to impress a few friends with my new cooking skills. They were all like, “No onions? No garlic? But it’s so good!” Yeah, I know, right?
So, if you’re looking to try something new in the kitchen, give Jain recipes a shot. You might be surprised at how much you like them. And who knows, you might even discover your inner chef along the way, just like I did, sort of.
