Today, I wanted to do something a little different and fun with the kids – create a dessert food web. So, I started by gathering a bunch of ingredients from the pantry and fridge. I got some chocolate chips, marshmallows, flour, sugar, and a whole lot of other sweet stuff.
First, I explained to the kids what a food web is. I told them it’s basically a diagram that shows how different things in nature are connected through what they eat. But instead of animals and plants, we’d be using desserts. It took a little while for them to get it, but they were excited nonetheless.
Getting Started
We started by brainstorming all our favorite desserts. We made a big list on a piece of paper. Then, we looked at the ingredients we had and tried to figure out which desserts we could make.
- Chocolate Chip Cookies: These were a must. I showed them how we mix flour, sugar, eggs, butter, and chocolate chips to make the dough. Then, we baked them in the oven.
- Marshmallow Treats: These are super easy. We melted some marshmallows and butter together, then mixed in some crispy rice cereal. We pressed the mixture into a pan and let it cool.
- Cupcakes: We mixed up some batter and poured it into cupcake liners. After baking, we let them cool and then had fun decorating them with frosting and sprinkles.
Building the Food Web
Once we had a bunch of desserts made, we started drawing our food web. On a big poster board, we wrote down the names of each dessert and drew arrows to show what ingredients they were made from. For example, we drew an arrow from “Chocolate Chips” to “Chocolate Chip Cookies,” and another from “Sugar” to “Cupcakes.”
The kids really got into it, drawing colorful arrows and adding little pictures of each dessert. We talked about how some ingredients, like sugar and flour, are used in many different desserts. It was a fun way to see how everything was connected.
The Best Part
Of course, the best part was eating all the desserts we made! We sat down and enjoyed our creations while looking at our food web. The kids were proud of what they made and learned something new at the same time.
It was a pretty successful day. We made a bit of a mess in the kitchen, but it was totally worth it. Plus, now I have a bunch of treats to snack on for the next few days! I think I’ll definitely try this again, maybe with a different theme next time. Maybe a savory food web? We’ll see!
