Okay, so, I’ve been on this kick lately where I’m trying to come up with desserts that start with every letter of the alphabet. It’s kind of silly, but it’s fun. Today was the letter “G,” and let me tell you, it was a bit of a head-scratcher at first. I mean, how many desserts can you think of that start with “G”?
I started by just brainstorming, jotting down any word that came to mind, whether it was a dessert or not. After a few minutes, I had a list but nothing that really screamed “dessert” to me.
So, I turned to the internet, just to see what others had come up with. I typed in “desserts that start with G” into the search bar and hit enter.
- A bunch of lists popped up, and one word kept appearing: Gelato. Now, I love gelato. It’s like ice cream but, in my opinion, way better. It’s smoother, denser, and the flavors always seem more intense.
- I scrolled through a few more articles, and it seemed like gelato was the go-to “G” dessert for most people.
That’s when I decided I was going to make some gelato. I’ve made it before, but it’s been a while. I found my favorite recipe, which is a pretty basic vanilla. The ingredients are super simple: milk, cream, sugar, egg yolks, and vanilla extract. You can add all sorts of flavors, but I figured I’d keep it simple for today.
Making the Gelato
I started by heating the milk and cream in a saucepan, then I whisked together the egg yolks and sugar until they were pale and fluffy. Once the milk mixture was hot, I slowly poured it into the egg mixture, whisking constantly so the eggs wouldn’t scramble.
Then, I poured everything back into the saucepan and cooked it over low heat, stirring until it thickened up a bit. It’s important not to let it boil, or else you’ll end up with sweet scrambled eggs instead of a custard. Finally, I stirred in the vanilla extract and let the mixture cool before chilling it in the fridge for a few hours.
After it was thoroughly chilled, I poured the mixture into my ice cream maker and let it churn. It took about 25 minutes for the gelato to reach the perfect consistency – soft and creamy but still firm enough to hold its shape.
I scooped some into a bowl and took a bite. Oh man, it was so good! It was rich and creamy, with just the right amount of sweetness and a strong vanilla flavor. It was definitely the perfect dessert to satisfy my “G” craving.
