Okay, so, today I’m gonna share my experience with making some Nepali food. It was a journey, let me tell you!
First off, I gathered all the ingredients I thought I’d need. I went to a couple of local Asian stores and managed to find most of the stuff. The spices were the trickiest part, but I got lucky with some momo masala and a few other essentials. It wasn’t easy, but I didn’t give up.
Then, I started with the basics – dal bhat. I soaked the lentils for a while, then cooked them with some turmeric and salt. Simple enough, right? While the lentils were simmering, I prepared the rice. I used a rice cooker, which made things a lot easier. I also chopped some vegetables for a quick stir-fry – some onions, tomatoes, and spinach.
Making Momos
Next up, I tackled the momos. This was the real challenge. I mixed the flour and water to make the dough, and boy, was it a workout! I kneaded it for a good ten minutes until it was nice and smooth. Then, for the filling, I minced some chicken, added some finely chopped onions, ginger, garlic, and that momo masala I found.
- Kneading the dough: I kneaded it for a good ten minutes until it was nice and smooth.
- Mixing the filling: I mixed everything thoroughly and let it sit for a bit to let the flavors mingle.
- Filling and shaping the momos: I rolled out small circles of dough, added a spoonful of filling in each, and then came the hard part – shaping the momos. It took a few tries, but I eventually got the hang of it.
- Steaming the momos: After that, I carefully placed the momos in the steamer, making sure they were not touching each other.
After that, I carefully placed the momos in the steamer. About 15 minutes later, they were done! They looked pretty good, if I do say so myself.
Lastly, I whipped up a quick tomato achar. I roasted some tomatoes, blended them with some chilies, garlic, and spices, and it turned out surprisingly tasty. I couldn’t believe how I roasted, ground and mixed such ingredients into delicious achar!
Putting it all together, the meal was a success! The dal bhat was comforting, the momos were delicious, and the achar added a nice kick. It was a lot of work, but totally worth it. I felt a real sense of accomplishment having made all of that from scratch. Plus, I have plenty of leftovers, so that’s dinner sorted for the next couple of days!
I definitely recommend giving Nepali cooking a try. It’s a bit of a challenge, but the flavors are amazing. And hey, if I can do it, anyone can!
