Impress Your Guests with These Cute Dinner Roll Bunnies!

Okay, so I tried making these dinner roll bunnies that I saw online, and let me tell you, it was a wild ride! I’m no expert baker, but the pictures looked so darn cute, I just had to give them a shot.

Getting Started

First, I had to choose whether to use the store-bought frozen dough to make things easy or to make things from scratch. I opted for the homemade route, because why not, right? The recipe was simple enough, just your basic yeast dough with flour, water, yeast, and a little sugar and salt. Mixing everything was the easy part. I threw all the ingredients into my trusty stand mixer and let it do its thing.

Kneading and Rising

Once the dough came together, it was time to knead. I floured my countertop and got to work, pushing and folding that dough like a pro. It felt kind of therapeutic, to be honest. Then came the waiting game – the dreaded rising time. I popped the dough in a greased bowl, covered it with a towel, and crossed my fingers.

  • First Rise: About an hour later, the dough had doubled in size! I punched it down (so satisfying) and divided it into smaller pieces.
  • Shaping the Bunnies: This is where the fun, and the frustration, began. I rolled out each piece into a long rope, then tried to tie it into a knot, leaving two long ends for the ears and a shorter one for the tail. My first few attempts looked more like abstract art than bunnies, I must say.
  • Second Rise: I arranged my sad-looking bunnies on a baking sheet and let them rise again. They puffed up a bit, which was encouraging, but they still didn’t quite resemble the fluffy bunnies I had envisioned.

Baking and Decorating

Into the oven, they went! I baked them until they were golden brown, and the smell was amazing. But when I took them out, well, they were still a bit wonky. Not exactly the picture-perfect bunnies I had hoped for.

But hey, I wasn’t giving up! I melted some butter and brushed it over the warm rolls, because butter makes everything better. Then, I added some details – raisins for eyes and little snips with scissors to define the ears. That definitely helped.

The Result

In the end, my dinner roll bunnies were far from perfect, but you know what? They were mine. They tasted pretty darn good, and my family got a good laugh out of them. We even made it a new tradition – every year we make ‘abstract art’ bunnies! So it is not just about the perfect shape, but the fun we have during the process. I guess that’s what matters, right? It’s all about the memories (and the butter). I will keep practicing, and who knows, maybe one day my bunnies will actually look like bunnies. Until then, I’ll keep enjoying my delicious, misshapen creations. I would also try to add some whole wheat into the dough next time, and it will be fun!
