Alright, let’s yak about this fella, Roy somethin’-or-other, the picture guy. Drink Pop Art Roy Lictenstein, that’s what they tell me to gab about. Never heard of him before, but they say he’s a big deal, painted all sorts of things.
Now, they call it “Pop Art.” Pop? Like soda pop? Guess it’s art about stuff everybody knows, like comic books and food. This Roy guy, he liked them comics, I hear. Drew pictures that looked like they came right outta the newspaper, all them dots and bright colors. Reminds me of them cheap candies they sell at the store, all flashy and sugary.
- He painted pictures of everyday things.
- Big bright colors, like them candies.
- Looks like comic books, they say.
I ain’t no art expert, mind you. Can’t tell a Picasso from a potato, but I know what I like. And this Roy fella, he made pictures that are easy on the eyes. You don’t gotta squint and scratch your head wonderin’ what it is. It’s right there, plain as day. A glass of somethin’, a lady cryin’, a big ol’ “POW!” like in them superhero books my grandson reads.
They say he was part of a whole bunch of artists, in the sixties, I think it was. Them “Pop Artists.” They painted TVs and famous people and even fast food. Imagine that! Paintin’ a picture of a hamburger! Well, I guess if it sells, it sells. Folks these days will buy anythin’, long as it’s got a fancy name attached to it. Lichtenstein art, they call it. Sounds foreign to me.
This Roy guy, he wasn’t just paintin’ comics, though. He did other stuff too. Everyday things, they say. Like what? Like a can of soup? A bottle of pop? Who knows? Maybe he even painted a picture of a darn washin’ machine. That’d be somethin’, wouldn’t it? A nice, clean washin’ machine, all shiny and new. Better than lookin’ at them blurry pictures where you can’t tell which end is up.
Roy Lichtenstein paintings sure are somethin’. Bright and bold, they call ’em. Bold, like a rooster in the henhouse. That’s what these pictures are like. They grab your attention, make you look. And that’s the point, ain’t it? To get folks lookin’ at your stuff? Whether it’s a prize-winning pumpkin at the county fair or a picture of a comic book girl, you want people to see it. You want them to say, “Hey, look at that!”
Now, I hear some folks didn’t like this Roy guy’s art at first. Said it wasn’t “real” art. Said it was too simple, too commercial. Well, I say, what’s wrong with simple? Sometimes, simple is best. And as for commercial, well, ain’t nothin’ wrong with makin’ a livin’, is there? This Roy fella, he found a way to make pictures people liked, and he made a name for himself doin’ it. Good for him, I say.
And now, they’re talkin’ about him again, this Roy Lictenstein. Years later, and folks are still lookin’ at his pictures. Must be somethin’ special about ’em, even if I don’t quite get it all. Maybe it’s the colors, maybe it’s the way he made things look like they came from a comic book, maybe it’s just that they’re fun to look at. Whatever it is, it worked. He made his mark, this Roy fella. Left somethin’ behind for folks to remember him by.
So, next time you see one of them bright, comic-book-style pictures, remember this Roy guy. Remember his name, Roy Lichtenstein, the fella who painted pop art. And remember, it don’t always gotta be fancy or complicated to be good. Sometimes, a picture of a soda pop can be just as interestin’ as a picture of a king or a queen. And that’s the truth, plain and simple, just like I like it.
This pop art movement, it’s a funny thing. Folks paintin’ everyday stuff, and suddenly it’s art. Makes you wonder, don’t it? Maybe I should start paintin’ my chickens. Call it “Chicken Art.” Probably wouldn’t sell for much, but hey, you never know. Maybe one day, my chickens will be hangin’ in a museum, right next to Roy Lictenstein’s comic books and soup cans. Now, that’d be somethin’!
