My Dog Just Ate a Chocolate Chip Cookie! Should I Be Worried?

My dog, that little fella, he ate a chocolate chip cookie. You know, those little brown things with the sweet chips in ‘em? Yeah, one of those. Scared the living daylights outta me, I tell ya. I heard somewhere chocolate ain’t good for dogs, somethin’ about it bein’ poison or somethin’. So, I got to frettin’ somethin’ fierce.

Is chocolate really bad for dogs? Well, from what I gathered, it is. It ain’t like they’ll drop dead right away from one little cookie, but it ain’t good for ‘em. It’s got this stuff in it, long names I can’t even pronounce, theobromine and caffeine they call it. Those things mess with their insides, make ‘em sick. Like, real sick. Vomiting, the runs, you name it.

My Dog Just Ate a Chocolate Chip Cookie! Should I Be Worried?
  • The type of chocolate matters: The darker the chocolate, the worse it is. That baker’s chocolate, the real dark stuff, that’s the worst. Milk chocolate, like in them cookies, ain’t as bad, but still ain’t good.
  • How much they ate: One little cookie, probably won’t kill ‘em, but a whole bunch? That’s trouble. The more they eat, the sicker they get. It’s like too much of anythin’ ain’t good for ya, same goes for dogs and chocolate.
  • How big the dog is: A tiny little pup, a little nibble could make him real sick. But a big ol’ hound, might take more to get him feelin’ poorly. Just like with people, the little ones are more sensitive, ya know?

So, what did I do when that dog ate that cookie? First thing, I panicked. Then I tried to remember how many cookies I baked. I usually make a big batch, you know, three dozen or so. And each cookie, well, it’s got a bit of chocolate in it, maybe a third of an ounce or so.

I watched him close, real close. For a day or two. Looking for anythin’ weird. Was he throwin’ up? Was his poop all runny? Was he actin’ all crazy? He was a bit jumpy for a while, hyper like, runnin’ around more than usual. But thank the lord, he didn’t get real sick. He just got a little bit of a sugar rush, I reckon. That chocolate musta made him feel all giddy.

But let me tell you, I learned my lesson. No more leavin’ cookies where that little fella can get at ‘em. From now on, those cookies are goin’ in a high cabinet, way outta his reach. I don’t wanna be goin’ through that again. It’s scary, thinkin’ your dog might get real sick because of somethin’ you left out. You love those little critters, don’t want nothin’ bad happenin’ to ‘em.

What to do if your dog eats chocolate? Well, first, don’t panic like I did. Try to figure out how much chocolate they ate and what kind it was. Then, watch ‘em close. If they start actin’ sick, call the vet, right away. Don’t wait. Better safe than sorry, I always say. They might tell you to bring ‘em in, or they might give you some advice over the phone. They know what they’re doin’, those vets. They’ll take good care of your dog.

And remember, keep that chocolate outta reach! High up, in a closed container, somewhere that dog can’t get to it. It’s just not worth the risk. A little bit of prevention goes a long way. And if you’re unsure, don’t hesitate to call the vet. That’s what they’re there for.

My Dog Just Ate a Chocolate Chip Cookie! Should I Be Worried?

Final words, keep them cookies safe and keep your dog safer. That’s all there is to it. Ain’t nothin’ more important than keepin’ those furry fellas healthy and happy. They’re part of the family, ain’t they?
