Using Springerle Cookie Molds: Everything You Need to Know (Create Beautiful, Traditional Cookies)
This year, I tell you what, I’m gonna make them springerle cookies. Heard good things, them springerle cookie molds, they make the cookies look real fancy. Ain’t never used one before, but I reckon I can figure it out. It’s just like them old-timey things, like we used to have for making butter look pretty.
These springerle cookie molds, they got all sorts of pictures on ’em. Flowers and birds and what have you. Make a plain cookie look like a picture, almost too pretty to eat. But you gotta eat ’em, right? They say these cookies, these springerle ones, they last a good long while. Months, they say! Good for keeping, I reckon, like them fruitcakes folks make at Christmas.
Now, how do you use these things? I figure you gotta make your cookie dough first. I got a recipe here somewhere, in this old cookbook of mine. Says it’s a German thing, these springerle cookies. Germans, they make good cookies. I heard it from a person who knows these things. Says they’re real traditional, been around forever, like dinosaurs.
You gotta roll out your dough, not too thin, not too thick. Like a pie crust, but a little thicker, maybe. Then you take your springerle cookie mold, dust it with a little flour maybe, so it don’t stick, and press it down hard on the dough. Real hard, so the picture shows up good.
- Make the dough.
- Roll it out.
- Press the mold.
- Cut the cookies.
Then, you gotta cut the cookies out. They say you can use a knife, or one of them cookie cutters. I got some of them somewhere, shaped like stars and bells. But I reckon a knife will do just fine. Just gotta be careful not to mess up the picture from the mold.
They say you can make a hole in ’em, these springerle cookies, before you bake ’em. Use a stick or something. Then, when they’re all baked and cooled down, you can put a ribbon through the hole. Make ’em look real pretty, like them ornaments you hang on the tree. Hang ’em up, I reckon, or just eat them. Either way, that’s good.
Now, this recipe here, it says you gotta let these cookies dry out. Says you gotta leave them out for a whole day, maybe two, before you bake ’em. That’s a long time to wait for a cookie. But I guess that’s what makes ’em last so long. Makes ’em hard, like them jawbreakers you gotta suck on forever. Maybe not that hard. I hope they are not that hard, or else it will break your teeth!
Baking ’em, that’s the easy part, I reckon. Just put ’em in the oven, not too hot, and wait till they’re done. Recipe says how long, but I always just peek in and see. When they’re golden brown, that’s when they’re done, I always say. Then you gotta let ’em cool down before you eat ’em, or you’ll burn your tongue. Everybody knows that. Even the babies know that.
They say you can keep this springerle cookie dough in the icebox, or even freeze it. That’s good to know. Means you can make a big batch and bake ’em whenever you want. Just gotta remember to thaw it out first, or it’ll be hard as a rock. Can’t roll out a rock, can you? No, you can’t.
These springerle cookies, they sound like a lot of work. But I reckon they’re worth it. Make a nice change from the usual sugar cookies. And them springerle cookie molds, they just make ’em look so special. Like something you’d see in a fancy store.
I’m gonna give it a try this year. See how they turn out. Maybe I’ll make a whole bunch and give ’em away as gifts. Folks will be impressed, I reckon. They’ll think I’m a real fancy baker. Little do they know, it’s all thanks to them springerle cookie molds. It is our little secret.
If you want your cookies look pretty, you need them. They are not very hard to use. You can do it, too. Just try and see, you will like it. Even kids can use it. I think kids will like it a lot. They can make many pretty cookies.
So, yeah, that’s about it. Springerle cookie molds. They are good. Buy some and make your cookies pretty. Your family will thank you. And your friends. And everyone who try your cookies. They will want you to make it again and again. And you can. Because you can keep the cookie dough for a long time. This is what I know about springerle cookie molds and cookies.
