Today, I wanted to try my hand at making a Scottish dessert called Cranachan. I saw this dessert mentioned online, it is called the “King of Scottish Desserts” . Sounds interesting, right? So, I gathered all the things I needed and got to work.
First, I got some raspberries. Cranachan is all about layers, and raspberries are a big part of it. I washed them and set them aside.
Next, I needed whipped cream. I poured some heavy cream into a bowl and started whipping it. It took a bit of time, but I kept going until it was nice and fluffy. That’s one layer down.
Then, I toasted some oatmeal. I put some oatmeal in a pan and cooked it until it was golden brown. The smell of toasted oatmeal is fantastic, you should have smelled it! It got a bit messy because I accidentally spilled some while transferring it from the pan, but I managed to clean it up quickly.
Honey was up next. I drizzled some honey into the whipped cream. I like my desserts a bit sweet, so I might have added a little extra. I mixed it in until the cream had a nice, sweet flavor.
Now, it was time to put it all together. I got a glass and started layering. First, some raspberries, then a spoonful of the honey whipped cream, and then some of the toasted oatmeal. I repeated the layers until the glass was full. It was a bit tricky to make it look neat, but I think I did okay. I did spill a bit of the cream when I was layering, but hey, that happens, right?
Here’s a summary of what I did:
- Gathered ingredients: I got raspberries, heavy cream, oatmeal, and honey.
- Prepared raspberries: Washed and set aside.
- Made whipped cream: Whipped heavy cream until fluffy.
- Toasted oatmeal: Cooked oatmeal in a pan until golden brown.
- Sweetened cream: Mixed honey into the whipped cream.
- Layered dessert: Put layers of raspberries, honey whipped cream, and toasted oatmeal in a glass.
The name ‘Cranachan’ comes from a Gaelic word that means ‘churn’. It is because of how the dessert is made. And get this – it used to be made with a soft cheese called crowdie! I didn’t have that, so I just used the cream. Maybe next time, I’ll try to find some crowdie. Anyway, the dessert turned out pretty good. It’s a mix of sweet, creamy, and crunchy. I enjoyed making it, and I definitely enjoyed eating it!
I’m not a pro at this, but I love trying new things in the kitchen. There were some messy moments, like when I spilled the oatmeal and the cream, but that’s part of the fun, isn’t it? If you are looking for a simple yet interesting dessert to make, give Cranachan a try. It is a taste of Scotland in a glass, as they say!
